It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Or at least it used to be. In modern times it seems we have sacrificed peace and goodwill for overspending, overeating, and over-committing. And I put myself in this camp too--it is hard not to get caught up in the desire to have a picture perfect holiday.
But what if this year could be different? What if this season could be simplified?
Part of the solution involves resetting our expectations. No Martha doesn't live here, nor will she be coming for dinner. So let's all take it down a notch. And shortcuts don't hurt either. Here are a few ideas to make this a less harried holiday:
1. Avoid the mall at all costs. Shop online and ship directly. For the frugal among us, free shipping day is December 16, which is really as late as you want to cut it. Here is a list of participating retailers including Macy's, Nordstrom, and REI: http://www.freeshippingday.com
2. If you will be hosting this year, learn to love potlucks. Because spending time with friends and family is more important than a perfectly coordinated menu.
3. Stock up on wine, candles and pantyhose--it's party time!
4. If you are not up for baking, coffee cards are the perfect tokens of appreciation. Who doesn't want to be treated to a peppermint mocha?
5. And if you organize just one space this month, let it be your coat closet. Clear out the stuff you've been meaning to take to Goodwill and make room for guest's coats, wrapping supplies and a little space for Santa's loot too.
Warmest Wishes from Inspired Solutions.
